Some time into the future, 94% of the species inhabiting
the world today have either gone extinct or been
genetically engineered out of existence. A drastic change
in global climate forces man kind out of the harsh, toxic air
and inhabitable heat and cold into hiding deep
underground. It is there in the darkness that researchers
have been attempted to modify human genes so that we
may become stronger and move back to the surface. Only
the issues of ethics and greed that hold the world back.
Gameplay
As players progress through the game, steep
obstacles and harsh environments impede their
progress. To overcome these difficulties, players
must defeat enemies and obtain blood samples.
Using these blood samples allow players to
transform the hero of the game, Daron, into a
veritable Chimera of species.
Absorbing Red fDNA vials transforms Darion's
body completely, while Blue fDNA augments the
body and enables the use of new abilities. Black
fDNA, when processed by support character Ellie,
allows the summoning of 'familiars' to fight
alongside the player.
Making use of weapons, armor and special items,
players journey across the land collecting rare
and extinct blood samples in a bid to resurrect the
world's animals and bring mankind out of the
shadows and back to the surface world.
Graphics & Sound
The Red Cell Project makes use of 3D
models and textures, though the
gameplay follows a 2D platforming style.
Primitive compared to modern standards,
Red Cell's segmented skeletal models did
not use vertex animation, though still 'got
the job done'. Fluid, though sometimes
awkward animations portrayed character
actions and reactions well. The project
currently does not feature a sound track,
though the theme and mood of the
project is that of sorrow, desperation and
despair. A healthy helping of particle
effects helps battles and special attacks
come to life.

Environment
Starting in a dark, underground
laboratory, players eventually find
themselves beneath the harsh sunlight.
The adventure continues on to toxic city
forests, sand covered historical
monuments and all the way to arctic
trundras, underwater museums and
frozen wastelands.
Development
Conception and development on this
project started in early 2008. By this
point, I had minimal experience with 3D
gaming and I really wanted to work on
a project that would let me develop
some much needed skill and
experience. I had not yet developed a
technique or skill for vertex animating,
so all body parts were segmented like
an early 32-bit game. My animating
skills we quite undeveloped at the time.
Most of the fun in this project
'Chimera Forms' that the main
character, Darion, might transform
into. By the time I closed this draft
of the project, I had 1 whole body
transformations. I had a fully
operating proof of concept and I
was pretty excited.
The item and inventory aspects of
the game menu were completely
functional, and the player could
equip many different weapons,
armors and accessories. The
player could customize their
character by equipping 'traits' like
double jumping.
I realized I still lacked too much
skill to complete the game as I
saw fit, so I suspended the project
to work on more challenging

final draft in the future.
